Semillas Fitó celebrates the second edition of the Fitó Week in Mexico, solidifying its connections and proximity to the entire agri-food chain

01/01/2024

On 21 and 22 February, Semillas Fitó will be celebrating its Fitó Week 2024 at the Breeding Centre facilities in Culiacán, Sinaloa. For Semillas Fitó, hosting an event of this magnitude is of vital importance, as it offers a significant opportunity to showcase the latest developments for the Mexican sector with the entire agri-food industry, while also reaffirming their distinctive quality and reliability.

The main focus of the Fitó Week 2024 is to demonstrate to the sector why it is that Semillas Fitó remains at the forefront of the Mexican cucumber market. One reason is the company’s extensive range of cucumbers, which includes European cucumbers such as Estrada and Zapata, as well as slicer cucumbers such as Zeus, and the latest addition, Rocket. It is worth noting that Zeus has already become a leading product in export markets.

Also, through the incorporation of new additions to the portfolio and addressing one of the most pressing issues in the sector at present, they introduce their range of grape tomatoes: Mulán, Solemio, and Firstige, all of which include resistance to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus.

All this without forgetting their range of peppers, including their blocky varieties such as Aquiles and Hermes and Lamuyo varieties such as Roble and Gallardo. The latter is already establishing itself as a leader in Lamuyo peppers in various regions of Mexico.

An important message conveyed by the company this year is the Breeding Mex, which encompasses all those varieties with 100% Mexican genetics. This is the result of the hard work in the field of numerous professionals in the company, all with the aim of providing productive varieties tailored to each region where the company operates.

Improving food is in our genes

Convinced of the major impact that seeds have throughout the agri-food chain, and with the responsibility of ensuring a better diet worldwide, Semillas Fitó intends to be a key agent in promoting this much-needed global change, under the slogan "Improving food is in our genes”, a new global positioning for Semillas Fitó's Vegetable Seeds division.

This new positioning is based on something more than just a mere slogan. It is a firm commitment to achieve, through seeds, a healthier and more sustainable diet. Helping to address global challenges such as food security (with more productive, more resistant varieties, etc.), and the reduction of food waste (more uniform varieties with greater postharvest properties), are among the priorities of Semillas Fitó. Semillas Fitó already contributes through its sectoral experience and its holistic vision of the market, and through the values of proximity, integrity and commitment inherent in this family business that is characterized by offering tailor-made solutions to its customers.

Sustainability Plan 2023-2026

Semillas Fitó aims to become a benchmark in sustainability matters. Therefore, the company is currently working on its Sustainability Plan 2023-2026, which outlines clear goals for the next three years: to position the company as a leader in sustainability within the industry. The plan involves implementing both internal and external initiatives and contributing varieties and concepts to support the development of a sustainable supply chain.

By 2026, the objective is to launch varieties on the market that have been selected for their special contribution to reducing the ecological footprint in all the processes of the agri-food chain; from the production of the seed itself, to the subsequent production of the fruit and its final distribution.

Moreover, the company is already committed in 2024 to implementing initiatives that promote the circular economy and mitigate the water footprint in its production centres.

The organization will also calculate its carbon footprint to implement strategies that will help reduce it. Another commitment over these three years is to increase the percentage of self-consumption of electricity across all centres. In conclusion, the goal is to complete the set of 20 projects outlined in the Sustainability Plan by the year 2026.
